Room Service

"Partnering with StickerApp allowed us to give the project a tangible dimension. The exhibition reinforced our belief that these objects are powerful storytelling devices."

Destination: Design

Long before social media, hotel luggage stickers were the ultimate travel keepsake. Collected on suitcases, they captured destinations, memories, and stories in a single graphic object.

For the second edition of ROOM SERVICE, a festival dedicated to contemporary graphic design, around 70 designers reimagined this iconic format by creating fictional destinations.

StickerApp partnered with ROOM SERVICE to bring the exhibition to life in sticker form. We had a chat with the team behind it, Agathe, Alexandra, and Alain, about the why, how, what's, the inspiration behind the project - and why hotel luggage stickers remain such powerful storytelling tools today.

StickerApp: Hello gang! Thanks for partnering with us for this project; we're so excited to share it with the world! If you don't mind, please introduce us to ROOM SERVICE and tell us how the A Room With You exhibition came about?

Room Service: Thank you so much; the pleasure is ours. ROOM SERVICE is a festival dedicated to contemporary graphic design. Over four days, it takes over different venues across Lyon, France, with conferences, exhibitions, workshops, screenings, and a graphic design market.

This second edition explored fiction and storytelling. It was in this context that A Room With You was born. After an exhibition dedicated to hotel door hangers, we discovered archives of vintage hotel stickers. These objects condense a destination, a promise of travel, and an entire imaginary world into just a few centimeters. We wanted to reverse their original purpose: instead of documenting a real journey, we invited designers to invent destinations that don’t exist.

StickerApp: Amazing, such a great idea. Do tell: what fascinates you about hotel stickers?

Room Service: Hotel stickers tell the story of both graphic design and travel. Historically, they represented a journey or a personal trajectory. Collected on a suitcase, they already formed a kind of visual autobiography.

Today, they resonate with the way we stage travel and identity. They show that just a few words, a typeface, or an image can bring an entire world to life.

StickerApp: Indeed, so. How did the designers approach the project?

Room Service: The brief was intentionally very open: imagine a fictional destination through the graphic language of hotel stickers. Among the 70 participating designers, some created complete narratives, while others imagined absurd, poetic, melancholic, or political places. Together, the works form a map of destinations that exist only because they were designed.

StickerApp: I bet you had a rather eclectic collection of designs! Why did you choose stickers as the medium?

Room Service: Short answer: YES! Stickers are just great. They are highly constrained graphic objects, but also objects designed to circulate. They are popular and accessible, and can exist just as naturally in a gallery as in the street.

Visitors didn’t just look at the stickers; they took them home, collected them, traded them, and stuck them elsewhere. In that way, the exhibition continued to live beyond the gallery space.

StickerApp: Perhaps the most affordable art there is! How did you approach the exhibition design?

Room Service: Right! The challenge was presenting such small objects while still allowing visitors to appreciate the collection as a whole. The exhibition took place in a former SNCF travel agency, where we displayed the stickers on nine suitcases from the 1990s, arranged on fluorescent pink carpet to recreate their original use.

StickerApp: So cool! What was your vision for the exhibition, and how did StickerApp help bring it to life?

Room Service: ROOM SERVICE is a fully self-funded festival. Partnering with StickerApp allowed us to give the project a tangible dimension. The print quality and custom die-cuts preserved the richness of every design while making it possible to distribute the stickers to visitors. The exhibition reinforced our belief that these objects are powerful storytelling devices. With more than 80 stickers on display, we celebrated the diversity of styles and creative practices at the heart of the ROOM SERVICE project.
