What is the difference between varnish and laminate on a label?
The level of protection. Varnish is a light liquid coating, while laminate is a film that protects against water, oils, scratches and everyday wear.
Varnish vs laminate
Both are finishes, the top layer over the printed label. Both come in gloss and matte.
Varnish
A liquid coating applied directly to the printed surface. It brings out colours and gives some scratch resistance, but it doesn't make the label waterproof. Varnish is light protection and cost-efficient, and is common for product labels.
Laminate
A thin film applied over the printed label. It creates a protective barrier against water, oils, chemicals and abrasion.
Which one should I choose?
-
Indoors and dry conditions: varnish is often enough.
-
Moisture, frequent handling or tougher environments: laminate is usually the better choice.
-
No protection needed: an uncoated label works for dry goods and labels you want to write on, see Can I write on an uncoated label?
